Nauta is associated with Hosokawa Micron’s conical screw mixing and drying technologies for industrial powder and bulk solids processing. The Nauta conical screw mixer is designed for gentle, low-shear batch mixing, while the same vessel principle is also applied in vacuum drying and other thermal processing operations.
The Nauta name stems from Johannes Ewardus Nauta (1890–1957), who founded Nautamix in Haarlem (NL). In 1939, he introduced the first conical screw mixer—a conical vessel with an orbiting screw travelling along the vessel wall—thereby creating the Nauta mixer. The design rapidly gained global adoption; Nautamix grew to around 150 employees with locations in Haarlem and Assen.
In 1982, Nautamix was acquired by the Hosokawa Micron Group. Since then, Hosokawa has further developed the original Nauta design and expanded the portfolio to include conical screw mixers and dryers used across industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, minerals and plastics. Today, Nauta is recognised as the benchmark for gentle, low-shear batch mixing with predictable scale-up and excellent cleanability.
