Nobilta

Super-High-Shear Mixer

The Nobilta is a multifunctional processing system designed for high-speed, precision powder mixing, particle surface modification and particle design. By applying extreme mechanical energy in a dry process, it combines fine particles into stable composite materials without the use of binders or additives.

Capable of handling powders from nano to micron size, the Nobilta achieves exceptional levels of dispersion, coating and particle fusion in one compact, energy-efficient unit.

Key Benefits

  • Combines mixing, composing, surface treatment and spheronisation
  • Suitable for nano-scale particle design and modification
  • Handles powders from nano to micron size ranges
  • Processes heat-sensitive, sticky, abrasive and hard-to-handle materials
  • Easy to clean, inspect and maintain
  • Low operating costs and minimal energy consumption
  • Optional wear-resistant or ceramic-lined components

Principle of Operation

Most mixing processes rely on convection, shear and diffusion — but for nano-level composition, much stronger impact, compression and attrition forces are required to overcome inter-particle cohesion. The Nobilta integrates all these mechanisms in a single unit, enabling simultaneous mixing, composing, surface treatment and spheronisation.

Inside the horizontal cylindrical chamber, a high-speed rotor (up to 30 m/s) subjects particles to intense mechanical impact and compression. The rotor geometry ensures uniform stress distribution, so that every particle undergoes the same degree of processing. The jacketed vessel allows precise temperature control during high-energy operation, preventing agglomeration, overheating or degradation of sensitive materials. This unique process achieves:

  • Composing – Nano-scale particles are permanently fused onto the surface of micron-sized particles, forming composites that enhance flowability, heat resistance, reactivity and solubility.
  • Precision Mixing (Dispersion) – Combines distributive and dispersive mixing to improve colour uniformity, tone, calcination performance and mechanical strength.
  • Shape Enhancement (Spheronisation) – Refines particle shape and reduces BET surface area for improved flow and packing density.

Process Flexibility

The Nobilta Super-High-Shear Mixer is ideally suited for advanced powder processing applications, including those involving heat-sensitive, abrasive or adhesive materials, for example:

  • Battery materials
  • Catalysts
  • Cosmetics
  • Dry Powder Inhalers (DPI)
  • Functional resins
  • Pigments and toners

Its ability to compose, coat and modify particles in a single dry step makes the Nobilta an essential technology in functional materials engineering, energy storage, and pharmaceutical formulation.

Batch Mixing Systems

Hosokawa Micron has been developing innovative solids processing systems for more than a century. As a result, we can draw on an unparalleled amount of know-how when designing new powder mixing systems. In a powder mixing system, the equipment, process steps and interacting parameters must all work together as an integral solution in order to ensure the optimal functionality, quality and efficiency of your total system. That's why we carefully select, configure and integrate all the components and processes when designing a powder mixing system.

FAQ — Nobilta Super-High-Shear Mixer

What is a Super-High-Shear Mixer?

A super-high-shear mixer is an advanced powder processing system that applies extreme mechanical energy to mix, disperse and modify particles. Unlike conventional mixers, it can combine and spheronise fine particles at the nano to micron scale without binders, creating composite materials with enhanced performance.

How does the Nobilta Super-High-Shear Mixer work?

The Nobilta uses a high-speed rotor (up to 30 m/s) inside a horizontal cylindrical chamber. The rotor generates impact, compression and shear forces that act equally on every particle, fusing nano- and micron-sized materials into uniform, composite particles with improved surface and structural properties.

What materials can be processed in the Nobilta?

The Nobilta handles fine powders and nano-materials such as catalysts, toners, pigments, battery materials, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical actives (DPI). It can process heat-sensitive, abrasive or sticky powders efficiently thanks to its jacketed, temperature-controlled design.

What are the main advantages of the Nobilta?

The mixer provides precise particle control, dry composing without binders, and surface modification at nano-scale precision. It enables mixing, composing, coating and spheronisation in a single step, offering high energy efficiency, reproducibility and consistent material functionality.

What sizes and scale-up options are available?

The Nobilta is available in models from 0.5 L laboratory units up to 300 L production systems. Hosokawa Micron provides process testing and scale-up support to ensure reproducible performance from R&D to full-scale manufacturing.

Can the Nobilta be customised for specific processes?

Yes. The Nobilta can be equipped with water-cooled jackets, ceramic linings, wear-resistant components and customised discharge systems. It can also be integrated into complete powder modification or particle design systems for advanced material processing.
