The DMR Flash Dryer by Hosokawa Micron is a compact, continuous drying system that combines drying, milling and classifying in a single, energy-efficient unit. Designed for safe and gentle drying of heat-sensitive products — including wet solids, pastes, slurries and filter cakes — the DMR delivers a fine, uniform powder in just seconds.
Even challenging materials can be processed efficiently thanks to the integrated high-shear rotor, which ensures rapid drying, effective deagglomeration and precise particle size control. By consolidating multiple process steps, the DMR simplifies operations, lowers energy consumption and reduces overall operating costs.
Key Benefits
Continuous drying, milling and classifying in a single compact system
Safe drying of temperature-sensitive products — even at elevated temperatures
Produces ultra-fine, uniform powders in just seconds
Handles moist solids with up to 80% moisture content — including slurries, pastes, doughs, filter cakes and wet powders
High evaporation capacity and fast thermal transfer
30–40% lower energy consumption per kg of evaporated water compared to conventional drying technologies
Small footprint and excellent accessibility for inspection and cleaning
Principle of Operation
In the DMR flash dryer, the wet product is fed via customised feeding systems into the milling and drying zone. Inside, a high-speed grinding rotor efficiently disperses and reduces the material to fine particles. A temperature-controlled stream of hot air (or optionally inert gas) – heated up to 650 °C – flows through the dryer while the system is kept under negative pressure. This hot airflow fluidises the particles in the lower section of the dryer, ensuring intense heat transfer and the instant evaporation of moisture.
The dried fine particles are carried upwards with the airstream to the integrated classifier, which separates them based on a defined cut point. Oversized or still-moist particles are returned to the drying zone until they are fully dried. The dried product is then separated from the airstream using a cyclone, filter, or wet scrubber.
Continuous fluidisation minimises product build-up on the chamber wall. Key process parameters – such as rotor speed, outlet temperature, moisture content and final particle size – can be precisely adjusted for optimal drying efficiency, product quality and process control.

Rotor Types
Hosokawa Flash Dryers are available with a choice of three rotor types, selected according to product characteristics and specific process goals. Each rotor offers distinct advantages to suit a wide range of applications:
DMR Rotor A high-speed multi-blade rotor designed for strong dispersion, generating a powerful air vortex with tip speeds of up to 110 m/s. Ideal for maximum dispersing performance.
MDH Rotor A horizontally driven rotor with swinging hammers for intensive grinding. Recommended for processing slurries and pastes requiring strong milling.
MDV Rotor A vertically driven grinding rotor that gently disperses wet agglomerates and solids. Suited for mild dispersion and grinding of heat-sensitive products.

Continuous Drying Systems
As a global developer, manufacturer and 'one-stop shop' supplier of powder processing systems and plants, Hosokawa Micron provides a wide range of both batch and continuous drying technologies. We carefully select, configure and integrate all components and processes in order to ensure the optimal functionality, quality and efficiency of your drying system.
Hosokawa Micron is an expert in developing advanced solids processing systems and we put a lot of our own energy into developing drying systems that will save you energy. The DMR flash mill dryer, for example, uses about 30-40% less energy per kilogram of evaporated water, compared to other direct drying technologies.

The DMR Flash Dryer is a continuous drying system that combines drying, milling and classifying in a single, compact unit. It is specifically designed for processing wet solids, slurries, pastes, and filter cakes — even those with high moisture content — into fine, uniform powders in a matter of seconds.
How does a DMR Flash Dryer work?
The DMR uses a stream of hot air to rapidly evaporate moisture from the feed material. Simultaneously, an integrated rotor provides mechanical energy to break up agglomerates and disperse the material evenly. A dynamic classifier ensures that only product within the desired particle size range is collected, while oversized material is recirculated for further processing.
What materials can be processed in the DMR Flash Dryer?
The DMR is suitable for a wide range of challenging materials, including heat-sensitive compounds, sticky or cohesive substances, and products with up to 80% moisture content. It can process slurries, filter cakes, pastes and wet powders — even those that are difficult to handle with conventional drying systems.
What are the advantages of the DMR Flash Dryer?
The DMR offers several key benefits: high evaporation rates, excellent energy efficiency, compact design, and fast drying with minimal thermal impact. It reduces operational costs by combining multiple process steps — drying, milling, and classifying — into one system, and uses up to 40% less energy than traditional drying technologies.
What capacities and sizes are available?
DMR Flash Dryers are available in various sizes to accommodate pilot-scale testing as well as full-scale industrial production. Capacities vary depending on the material properties and moisture content but can range from a few kilograms to several tonnes per hour. Hosokawa Micron can tailor each installation to your specific process requirements.
