Pancreatin Vacuum Drying

Pancreatin drying requires careful control of moisture and solvent removal, with particular attention to enzyme activity. Hosokawa Micron supplies vacuum drying equipment and integrated systems configured around the material properties and quality requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Drying requirements for pancreatin

Pancreatin is a mixture of digestive enzymes, including lipase, amylase and protease. During its manufacture, wet material may require drying to remove moisture and residual process solvents before further formulation.

The drying stage must balance liquid removal with the required product characteristics. Important considerations include:

  • Enzyme activity before and after drying.
  • Residual moisture and solvent content.
  • Product behaviour as the material becomes dry.
  • Powder handling and discharge.
  • Cleaning requirements and batch traceability.

The appropriate drying approach depends on the starting material, upstream processing and final product specification.

Controlled drying under vacuum

Vacuum drying reduces the boiling temperature of water and process solvents, allowing evaporation at lower temperatures than at atmospheric pressure. This provides flexibility when developing a drying process for temperature-sensitive materials.

Preserving enzyme activity requires careful control of product temperature, exposure time and changing moisture and solvent levels. Product-specific trials and analytical testing help establish whether the proposed drying approach meets the required quality criteria.

Nauta vacuum drying equipment

The Nauta® vacuum dryer combines indirect heating with screw agitation in a conical vessel. Product movement supports heat transfer and brings material into contact with the heated vessel wall, while evaporated liquids are removed through the vapour handling system.

The dryer can accommodate different material consistencies, including wet powders, pastes and materials that become cohesive during drying. This makes it a relevant option to evaluate for pancreatin drying.

Equipment selection and configuration depend on the material’s drying behaviour, handling characteristics and pharmaceutical production requirements.

Integration into pharmaceutical production

Hosokawa Micron can configure the dryer together with ancillary equipment to form an integrated drying system. Depending on the application, the scope may include:

  • Vapour filtration, condensation and solvent recovery.
  • Product charging and discharge arrangements.
  • Cleaning provisions and accessible product-contact surfaces.
  • Process controls, monitoring and data recording.

The system is developed around the customer’s production environment, cleaning strategy and qualification requirements.

Test before you invest

Process and equipment trials can be carried out at our test centre in the Netherlands, depending on the material and testing requirements. Our experienced process specialists work with you to determine the right process, equipment or system configuration for your application. Each trial is supported by a detailed technical report, helping you select the right solution with confidence.
