Recycling Technologies for Industrial Materials

Recycling of industrial materials plays a key role in the transition towards a circular economy. However, processing material streams such as plastics, rubber, fibres, cables, paper and other bulk materials presents significant challenges due to variations in composition, contamination and material properties.

To support efficient material recovery and reuse, recycling processes require consistent particle size, controlled moisture levels and reliable handling. This calls for robust process technologies and integrated systems. For more insight, read our article on plastic waste treatment and recycling.

Recycling Process Overview

Recycling processes typically consist of multiple steps, depending on the material and recycling route. These include size reduction of waste materials, drying to remove moisture and stabilise products, mixing and blending to achieve homogeneous material properties, and agglomeration or compaction to improve handling and downstream processing.

Depending on the application, recycling may involve mechanical processing, material upgrading or recovery of valuable components from complex waste streams.

By combining these process steps, materials such as plastics, rubber, fibres, cables and paper can be transformed into reusable products or valuable secondary raw materials.

Process Technologies for Recycling

Different recycling applications require specific process technologies:

  • Size reduction and granulation
for processing plastics, rubber, cables and other solid materials
  • Drying technologies
to remove moisture and stabilise recycled materials
  • Mixing and blending
    to achieve consistent material properties
  • Agglomeration and compaction
to improve flowability and downstream processing

These technologies can be combined into integrated systems tailored to specific materials, capacities and process requirements.

Granulation for Recycling Applications

Granulation is a key step in many recycling processes, particularly for plastics and rubber materials, enabling efficient size reduction and preparation of materials for further processing or reuse.

For demanding recycling applications, Hosokawa offers robust granulation solutions such as the Rotoplex® granulator, designed for a wide range of materials including plastics, rubber, cables, fibres, leather and paper. Thanks to its durable design and high cutting performance, the Rotoplex granulator ensures reliable operation, consistent particle size and efficient processing of both soft and tough materials.
