Processing Systems for Starch Modification

Process starch and starch derivatives efficiently with advanced powder processing systems from Hosokawa Micron. Our technologies support key operations such as agglomeration, drying, mixing and moisture adjustment, enabling controlled starch modification and reliable production of high-quality starch products with consistent dispersion behaviour, flowability and product performance.

Produce modified starches and starch derivatives using continuous processing technology designed for industrial reliability. The Hosokawa continuous agglomeration system combines a Flexomix mixer with a fluid bed dryer/cooler, enabling precise wet agglomeration, controlled residence time and uniform moisture distribution for stable and energy-efficient production.

Modifying Starch with Hosokawa Process Equipment

  • Raw Starch
During starch milling the moisture content often decreases below the required product specification. Using the Flexomix mixer allows precise moisture adjustment and homogeneous mixing, resulting in a starch product with exactly the specified moisture content.
  • Dry cationisation
Cationic starch is widely used in specialised pulp and paper applications. The Flexomix enables reaction agents and the required amount of caustic soda to be dosed and distributed homogeneously within a residence time of approximately one second, preventing overdosing and ensuring controlled reaction conditions. The mixture can subsequently be neutralised after the required reaction time.
  • Agglomeration and instantisation
Pre-gelatinised starch powders can be difficult to disperse in water, as fine particles tend to remain on the liquid surface. Wet agglomeration creates porous agglomerates with improved dispersion behaviour. This process can also be used to produce instant starch mixtures for sauces and other food applications, resulting in agglomerates with excellent flowability, minimal dust formation and optimal dispersion properties.
  • Starch derivatives
Maltodextrine and dextrose can be agglomerated to improve flowability and handling properties. Starch derivatives can also be used as carrier materials in tablet production to optimise the performance of tablet presses.
